Alex Gandsas, MD MBA
Dr. Gandsas is a nationally renowned bariatric surgeon and director of AAMC's Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery Program. Board-certified and fellowship-trained, Dr. Gandsas has performed more than 3,000 bariatric surgeries. He is chairman of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons’ Bariatric Surgery Committee and is an expert in the field of bariatric revision surgery.
Currently, his research and publishing efforts focus on obesity surgery, as well as the use of emerging technologies for minimally invasive surgery, telemedicine and surgical education. As of this year, Dr Gandsas will be also offering patients robotic bariatric surgery. He is actively involved in the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, as well as the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
Previously, Dr. Gandsas worked at the School of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Stratford, NJ, where he was professor and chair of the Department of Surgery. There, he directed the university’s bariatric fellowship program and served as chief of surgery of Kennedy University Hospital in Stratford, NJ. Prior to that, he was division chief of Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and an associate professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Gandsas earned his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in Argentina. Following a general surgery residency in Michigan, he completed fellowships in advanced laparoscopy and laparoscopic bariatric surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, respectively.
